About the Project

In response to Sheffield City Council’s Making Sheffield a Smarter City brief, this MA project addressed “How do we use digital to increase well-being and happiness?”
The brief: Research and create a new digital product, employing Design Thinking methods and giving evidence of how user research was used to shape the concept.
User Research

In user research, respondents were asked to identify their “Barriers to becoming fitter”. The top response was lack of time for exercise, followed by a lack of motivation. Health issues were also a factor. These frustrations were considered when formulating the key features of the app.
Ideation

By learning about the commuters who struggle to make time in their lives to become fitter, we were able to define the challenge based on user needs and insights. We could then brainstorm ideas leading to HomeStretch.
Elevator Pitch: For busy people in Sheffield who want to build exercise into their daily commute, HomeStretch is a mobile app that encourages them to hop off public transport or park up early, by letting them know how many steps they would achieve towards their daily goal!
User Journey
User Testing (Prototype & Test)

Initial user testing feedback revealed that there was confusion as to the meaning of the Bus Stop icon, representing the time to alight from the bus. Follow-up A-B Testing was used to investigate which of the alternative icons worked best to convey the time to alight from the bus.
