About the Project

In response to Sheffield City Council’s Making Sheffield a Smarter City brief, this MA project addressed “How can digital reform Sheffield’s public sector?”
The brief: Create a mobile application for Android devices that demonstrates a clear understanding of the design considerations and functionality available from the platform with clear consideration shown towards the target audience.
User Research
In a research survey carried out among householders in Sheffield, more than half identified lack of clear information on household recycling as the largest impediment to better home recycling.
Concept development
In response to the identified need for more easily accessible information on household recycling, Wheelie was designed as a one-stop-shop for all you need to know in Sheffield about recycling in the home.
It was envisaged that Wheelie would be developed in collaboration with Sheffield City Council and Veolia. It would encourage and support Sheffield residents to recycle by providing a broad range of up-to-date and accessible recycling information specific to their area.
Initial app wireframes
The brand identity developed for the app uses a colour palette typically attributed to sustainability and eco-friendliness.
For optimal accessibility, large buttons and minimum distance between the area of user’s attention and the task-related button were ensured. The homepage has a full menu of all main features to aid navigation. High contrast allows the app to be used in brightly lit situations and on devices with lower specification and poor colour support.
